Why were the turnout motors side-mounted to start off with?

It might partly have to do with the fact that not many turnouts IRL have underfloor mounted point levers, and partly be due to the fact that mommy would not like it if her pumpkin had to drill holes in the diningroom table/floor in order to install under-the-table switch motors.
