I have not booked a trip to Hamburg..
I have not booked a trip to Hamburg..
I have not booked a trip to Hamburg - I have booked TWO trips to Hamburg!
I am really excited to be visiting MiWuLa on Saturday 26th before travelling on to Wuppertal to ride the famous suspended railway.
Then I will be visiting again with my family in April and we will be in Hamburg for the full week.
I am so excited to see the progress MiWuLa are making and to see beautiful Hamburg again.

Re: I have not booked a trip to Hamburg..
Dear RedDog,
great to hear that you will return to Hamburg. And it is a good idea to ride the Schwebebahn in Wuppertal: Do you know that there are some more suspended railways next to Wuppertal? There is one called H-Bahn at Dortmund University: Unfortunately the H-Bahn does only travel on weekdays and on Saturday until 4:00 p.m., not on Sundays.
Different to the Schwebebahn in Wuppertal, the H-Bahn in Dortmund and the SkyTrain at Düsseldorf Airport do not have a driver: From Wuppertal Vohwinkel train station (not far away from the Schwebebahn) you only need ±30 minutes to reach Düsseldorf airport to ride the SkyTrain and you can use it on Saturday and Sunday, too.
Please share your plans (when you are going to leave Hamburg and come to Wuppertal and how much time you have to spend here), so that I or others may give you advice. I live in Hagen (between Dortmund and Wuppertal) and I know at least one other person from this Forum who also lives next to Wuppertal so maybe we can meet in Wuppertal.
Anyway - the Schwebebahn in Wuppertal has the longest track and should be your first choice, but if you have some more time, the SkyTrain at Düsseldorf airport should be your 2nd choice. And if you have more time, you can just complete your trip with the H-Bahn in Dortmund except Sunday.

Have fun on your trips and enjoy the Wunderland.
Did you know that, with a bit of luck, it could be possible to take part in Yullbe?
As Stefan wrote, please send us a note when you arrive in Wuppertal, my office is less than 1 Minute away from his last photo.
Stay healthy!

Re: I have not booked a trip to Hamburg..
RedDog, you're invited to bring some quality beer from Hamburg and compare it. The Brauhaus (brewery) offers homemade beer and Bremme, Wicküler and Waldschloß have been famous here.
The first three are in vicinity of the Schwebebahn. Don't forget to bring your umbrella as weather here has the same quality than in Hamburg.
BTW, 2/26 is a near miss, we will visit Hamburg on 2/25. Hope to see you in Wuppertal.

I have not booked a trip to Hamburg -
I can imagine, that "Hamburg weather" may be as good as Scottish weather? So RedDog will recognice no difference?!?

Re: I have not booked a trip to Hamburg..
I have really enjoyed returning to this thread and reading all the comments - helpful and funny.
Ich werde meinen Regenschirm nicht vergessen!
My plan for my few days in Germany is like this:
I will arrive in Hamburg late on the evening of Friday 25th. I am staying near MiWuLa which I think is open until 1:00 so I might go on the evening, but I will probably just enjoy a Hamburg beer in the hotel. I have a deep love of Hamburg beer.
On Saturday 26th I plan to arrive at MiWuLa for opening (I think 7:30) or quite soon after. I will stay in MiWuLa until late morning. I have a couple of other things to do in Hamburg (Rudolkf Beufay) and will then catch the train to Wuppertal.
I should arrive in Wuppertal at about 19:30 on Saturday and I am staying in the Premier Inn which I think is not too far from the station.
Sunday 27th I will catch the train to Bonn and have a ticket for Beethoven Haus Museum. I am not sure what else there is to do in Bonn but I expect to stay here until early afternoon. Then I am getting the train to Koln where I will visit the cathedral before returning to Wuppertal. I plan to spend the rest of the day in Wuppertal riding the Schwebebahn - Stefan Mit F, the pictures you posted have me very excited. This is great advice and very useful.
On Monday 28th I may stay in Wuppertal or I might return to Koln - I have not plans yet. I had hoped to get a driving lesson in Wuppertal so that on future visits I will be able to drive - without endangering life. Every Fahrschule I have tried to contact has not replied. Any recommendations or advice here would be helpful. German roads scare me more than the Loch Ness Monster.
On Tuesday 1st March at about midday I will leave Wuppertal and get the train to Berlin - I fly home from Berlin.
I would really enjoy meeting any of the brilliant people from this forum for coffee, beer, tea, whisky - but not golf! I am sorry that my schedule is quite tight but I am trying to cram in about 2 years worth of planned visits into 1 trip. I love Germany and German people and want to see as much as I can in a short time.
Any advice on things to do, things not to do, places to go - or anything else is very welcome.
I would really appreciate any help or advice. A good brauhaus where I can go alone (or come with me!), a good fahrschuke, things to see and do in Wuppertal or Koln on the Monday - or anything at all!
Thanks everyone!

https://www.fahrschule-humke.de/ can be reached by telephone, they are speaking english and they are at the office right now.

They are located in Vohwinkel, which is the western terminal of the Schwebebahn.

Re: I have not booked a trip to Hamburg..
Dear RedDog,
when you visit the Beethoven Haus Museum in Bonn, I can recommend the Deutsches Museum for technology in Bonn-Bad Godesberg.
Right in front you can see a part of the Transrapid.
It just takes 20 minutes by tram from the Bonn Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz/Beethoven Haus to Bonn Hochkreuz/Deutsches Museum.
In cologne I've been to the Schokoladenmuseum more often than to the Kölner Dom. If you like chocolate, you can reach it just by feet in 20 minutes from cologne central station walking along the rhine promenade. This also allows you to take a nice picture of the Hohenzollern Bridge: I'm sorry for the low quality, I made this picture with my mobile in 2012.
Or you take the bus no. 132 or 133. That will take 8 minutes and there is a bus station called "Schokoladenmuseum" just next to it.
There are direct local trains from Cologne to Düsseldorf airport in less than 40 minutes, if you want to ride the SkyTrain at Düsseldorf airport, too.
So you can decide when returning back from Cologne or from Bonn to go direct to Wuppertal or via Düsseldorf.

Re: I have not booked a trip to Hamburg..
Dear Henry,
Few years ago I would have adviced RedDog to visit the Müngstener Brücke in Solingen near Wuppertal: This 107 meter high bridge opened in 1897 is a great prove of engineering. But it is not longer there. Someone from Hagen took it away and it's not known where he brought it:
nice to see. Last time in Cologne, the Ever Given was there and blocked everything.Henry M Blaubaer hat geschrieben: ↑Donnerstag 10. Februar 2022, 17:31I took a picture near Köln, Queen Mary 2 !! Fantastic

Close to Bonn you will find the cog railway to "Drachenfels Mountain" https://www.drachenfelsbahn.de/index.php/en/
In the city of Bonn you will also find some museums https://www.deutsches-museum.de/en/bonn or the https://www.hdg.de/en/haus-der-geschichte
If you are in Cologne I recommend the https://www.deutzerbrauhaus.de/de/ in station of Köln Messe/Deutz or in the old town https://peters-brauhaus.de/
There is a lot to do in this region - you have to stay longer or come back

I discovered Nessie in the water in Scotland 1995.
