Are the buildings in the layout handmade or out of the box kits?

Both - a lot of shown buildings are not to buy, so there is no alternative ...
Sometimes they have a change or reconstruction of existing box kit buildings.
All buildings (and vehicles) on the airport sector are nearly complete self-made!

Are they plastic molded or wood?

Are the facades painted on?

All sorts of materials as well as modern techniques including Cad/Cam and Laser cut are used.

Moin adson,

there are more than 1.200.000 visitors a year. => Averaged about 3300 people a day.
(More in school holidays, less e.g. in January... on days with foul weather some more people than on sunny days...)

welcome to the forum. Hope you'll enjoy it.
Since the opening on August 16th 2001 up to August 13th 2014
Minatur Wunderland has welcomed a total of 12'000'000 visitors.
This would figure an average of over 2'500 Visitors each day.
BUT:
The 10 millionth visitor was registered on December 5th 2012,
so the average nowadays is higher than in former times.
If you reckon 2 millions from December 5th 2012 until August 13th 2014,
it results in an average of over 3'200 each day.
